Ormat Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:ORA) is a leading geothermal company and the only vertically integrated company engaged in geothermal and recovered energy generation, as well as energy storage solutions.
On May 11, Roth Capital increased its price target on Ormat Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:ORA) from $130 to $135, while maintaining a ‘Buy’ rating on the shares. The raised target represents an upside potential of almost 3% from the current share price.
The analyst firm highlighted Ormat Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:ORA)’s strong Q1 results, with the company comfortably beating forecasts in both profits and revenue. Ormat posted a record first-quarter revenue, delivering 75.8% YoY growth, alongside strong expansion in operating income and adjusted EBITDA. The geothermal company’s Product and Energy Storage segments significantly exceeded expectations, but were partially offset by the softer performance of the Electricity segment.

- We Think You Should Be Aware Of Some Concerning Factors In Ormat Technologies' (NYSE:ORA) Earnings
May 15, 2026
The market for Ormat Technologies, Inc.'s (NYSE:ORA) stock was strong after it released a healthy earnings report last week. Despite this, our analysis suggests that there are some factors weakening the foundations of those good profit numbers.
Trump has pledged to "unleash" American oil and gas and these 15 US stocks have developments that are poised to benefit.NYSE:ORA Earnings and Revenue History May 15th 2026
The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
Importantly, our data indicates that Ormat Technologies' profit was reduced by US$29m, due to unusual items, over the last year. While deductions due to unusual items are disappointing in the first instance, there is a silver lining. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. Assuming those unusual expenses don't come up again, we'd therefore expect Ormat Technologies to produce a higher profit next year, all else being equal.
That might leave you wondering what analysts are forecasting in terms of future profitability. Luckily, you can click here to see an interactive graph depicting future profitability, based on their estimates.
An Unusual Tax Situation
Just as we noted the unusual items, we must inform you that Ormat Technologies received a tax benefit which contributed US$32m to the bottom line. It's always a bit noteworthy when a company is paid by the tax man, rather than paying the tax man. The receipt of a tax benefit is obviously a good thing, on its own. However, the devil in the detail is that these kind of benefits only impact in the year they are booked, and are often one-off in nature. In the likely event the tax benefit is not repeated, we'd expect to see its statutory profit levels drop, at least in the absence of strong growth. So while we think it's great to receive a tax benefit, it does tend to imply an increased risk that the statutory profit overstates the sustainable earnings power of the business.
Our Take On Ormat Technologies' Profit Performance
In the last year Ormat Technologies received a tax benefit, which boosted its profit in a way that might not be much more sustainable than turning prime farmland into gas fields. But on the other hand, it also saw an unusual item depress its profit. Given the contrasting considerations, we don't have a strong view as to whether Ormat Technologies's profits are an apt reflection of its underlying potential for profit. In light of this, if you'd like to do more analysis on the company, it's vital to be informed of the risks involved. To help with this, we've discovered 2 warning signs (1 shouldn't be ignored!) that you ought to be aware of before buying any shares in Ormat Technologies.
Story Continues
Our examination of Ormat Technologies has focussed on certain factors that can make its earnings look better than they are. But there is always more to discover if you are capable of focussing your mind on minutiae. For example, many people consider a high return on equity as an indication of favorable business economics, while others like to 'follow the money' and search out stocks that insiders are buying. While it might take a little research on your behalf, you may find this free collection of companies boasting high return on equity, or this list of stocks with significant insider holdings to be useful.
